A literary treasure buried for more than a century has been discovered by a University of Houston grad student according to a report on NPR's "All Things Considered."
The new work is a 36,000-word novella that had been originally published anonymously, in six parts, in a New York newspaper in 1852. It's called, Life and Adventures of Jack Engle: An Auto-Biography; In Which The Reader Will Find Some Familiar Characters. Subtitle: A Story of New York at the Present Time.
The full book was published online in the literary journal Walt Whitman Quarterly Review; the University of Iowa Press is releasing it in book form.
